Inspired by Italian Renaissance architecture, the Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild was built in 1912 on the initiative of Baroness Beatrice Ephrussi de Rothschild, and bequeathed to the Académie des Beaux-Arts of the Institut de France in 1934.

Until the end of the 19th century, Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat was only a small hamlet of fishermen belonging to the commune of Villefranche-sur-Mer.
